OUR FRAGRANCE LIBRARY
Sawdust & Embers has been developing candles since 2016. Some fragrances have become permanent parts of our collections, while others were created for a season, released in limited quantities, or eventually retired.
This library preserves that history. It brings together the fragrances that define our current collections alongside past releases that helped shape the Sawdust & Embers world. Available fragrances may include a shopping link; archived entries remain here as part of our story.
New fragrances and returning releases will be added as the collection evolves.
Crafted from tradition. Inspired by nature.
HOW WE BUILD A FRAGRANCE
We begin with an atmosphere, place, material, memory, or story rather than a single ingredient. A fragrance may evoke mountain air, worn leather, tomato leaves, ancient woods, or something more abstract. From there, individual scent materials are layered to create structure, contrast, and movement from the first impression through the final dry-down.
The notes listed for each candle describe how the finished fragrance is experienced. They are an olfactory map—not necessarily a literal list of every material used in the formula. A cedar note, for example, may be created from one material or from several materials working together to produce the character of cedar.
ESSENTIAL OILS & FRAGRANCE COMPOUNDS
Candle fragrance is more nuanced than a simple choice between “natural” and “synthetic.” Fragrance formulas can include essential oils, botanical extracts, naturally derived aromatic isolates, and manufactured aroma compounds. Each type of material contributes different qualities to a finished scent.
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic mixtures obtained from plant material, commonly through distillation or expression. They are not automatically safer, cleaner, or more sustainable simply because they come from a plant. Their safe use still depends on the specific material, concentration, intended application, and level of exposure.
Manufactured aroma compounds allow a perfumer to create effects that may be unavailable, inconsistent, unsuitable for candles, or impractical to obtain directly from nature. They can also provide stability and precision within a formula. “Manufactured” does not automatically mean unsafe, just as “natural” does not automatically mean harmless.
The environmental impact of a fragrance material can also depend on cultivation, land and water use, extraction, manufacturing, transportation, availability, and the quantity required. Origin alone does not tell the entire story.
FORMULATED FOR THE CANDLE
A fragrance that smells beautiful in a bottle must also perform properly in wax. We evaluate how a formula behaves with our soy wax blend, cotton wick, vessel, and intended fragrance level.
Testing considers cold scent, scent while burning, wax compatibility, wick performance, flame behavior, and the overall character of the candle throughout its use. The goal is a balanced fragrance that feels expressive in a space without losing the idea that inspired it.
WHAT “SCENT NOTES” MEAN
Top, middle, and base notes describe the way a fragrance unfolds.
Top notes create the first impression and are often perceived quickly. Middle notes form the central character of the fragrance. Base notes provide depth, warmth, and lasting structure.
These categories help communicate the experience of a fragrance, but candles warm and diffuse differently from perfume worn on skin. Customers may perceive several layers at the same time, and the balance can change as the candle burns.
FOUNDATIONS
Foundations brings together the amber-glass fragrances that defined our approach to scent—grounded in distinctive places, natural materials, and familiar moments. These are the fragrances we return to: layered, atmospheric, and enduring.
BOTANICA
Botanica begins with the character of living things—the green snap of a tomato leaf, the quiet depth of wild fig and oak, and the softness of magnolia in bloom. These clear-glass fragrances interpret atmosphere, texture, and energy rather than reproducing a plant literally.
FOLKLORE
Where fragrance becomes storytelling. These immersive 10 oz candles draw from myth, landscape, memory, and the mysteries carried between them.
ETHEREAL JOURNEYS
Fragrance for the inward journey. Ethereal Journeys explores introspection, atmosphere, and quiet luxury through poetic, layered scents.
THE ARCHIVE
Retired fragrances remain here as part of the Sawdust & Embers story. These candles are no longer part of the current collection and are not available to purchase unless specifically re-released.
